Pandemonium as armed thugs attack Lagos community, injure 7 residents, loot property

No fewer than seven persons, on Sunday, were injured while property including cars were vandalised when armed thugs attacked residents of Abule Ado, a community in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State.

Among the injured were said to be people returning from church, and those who were attacked in their homes.

They reportedly suffered gunshot, matchete cuts inflicted on them by the hoodlums, who operated with reckless abandon.

Video footage and audio messages shared across social media platforms showed armed hoodlums going after residents of a particular ethnic group following the fallout of Saturday’s election.

It was learnt the outcome of the election was not favourable to the hoodlums, who in turn, accused non-indigenes in the community of voting against their interests.

The miscreants were said to have invaded homes, destroying vehicles, breaking windows and doors and fetching their victims out for attack.

The violence, which lasted for hours, was said to have snowballed into an ethnic fight as victims of the attack regrouped to defend themselves.

The hoodlums reportedly were alleged invaded a hotel in the area, and destroyed vehicles parked in the premises.

It was learnt that it took the intervention of military men to restore calm in the area, as efforts by the police including firing of teargas did not deter the hoodlums.

But spokesman of the Lagos State Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, described the incident as intra-community fight, assuring that that normalcy has been restored to the community.

Hundeyin said: “The police have since restored normalcy in Abule-Ado.

“Intra-community fight broke out in the area earlier this morning resulting in destruction to property. Owing to the timely arrival of the police, no life was lost and no property was razed as widely claimed.

“Two persons have been arrested and investigation has commenced into the matter.

“Police officers remain on ground to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

“Lagos State remains generally peaceful and secure and citizens are encouraged to continue to conduct their activities assured of the commitment of the Lagos State Police Command to guarantee their safety at all times.”

A couple was on Sunday morning found dead in their Ikeja residence.

The elderly couple whose identity was simply given as the Egbeolus were suspected to have been murdered at their 1, Adefolu Drive, Near New World Hotel, Ikeja, residence.

It was learnt that their domestic worker was also discovered severely beaten by policemen who raced to the scene.

Hundeyin confirmed the incident but said he was yet to get more details about the death and attack at the residence. He said investigation had commenced.
