- Police launch manhunt for fleeing attackers
Tension has risen in Oyo State following the death of a school teacher, Mr. Fatai Adegoke, who was allegedly beaten by his students after he cautioned them against gambling during school hours at Soun High School, Ogbomoso.
Reports said that trouble started when Adegoke confronted a group of students reportedly gambling inside a classroom. The situation escalated, and the students allegedly attacked him, inflicting severe injuries, including fractures.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from the injuries sustained.
The incident has thrown the school and the Ogbomoso community into mourning and sparked widespread outrage among education stakeholders in the State.
A coalition of concerned educators described the incident as “horrifying and unacceptable,” noting that the late teacher was only trying to enforce discipline in the classroom.
“With deep pain and outrage, we condemn the brutal killing of Mr. Fatai Adegoke, a dedicated educator who lost his life while discharging his duty,” the group said in a statement.
The coalition called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers, the Teaching Service Commission, and security agencies to ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted. It also urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s upbringing, lamenting what it described as rising indiscipline among students.
“Our schools are becoming unsafe for teachers who devote their lives to shaping the future of young Nigerians,” the group added.
The students involved in the attack are said to have fled after the incident, while police authorities have launched a manhunt to track and arrest them.
