Outrage as vigilantes assault, strip female NYSC member in Anambra

Armed men suspected to be members of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, popularly known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, have allegedly assaulted a female corps member in Anambra State.

The victim, identified as Jennifer Edema Elohor, was said to have been attacked alongside some of her colleagues after the vigilantes stormed their lodge.

A disturbing video shared by the Haven360 Foundation on Facebook showed the corps member being beaten and stripped naked by men armed with rifles.

The incident has sparked outrage across the country, with Nigerians demanding a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.

Reacting to the development, the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, described the assault as “unfortunate and unacceptable.”

He confirmed that the operatives involved had been identified, arrested, and detained pending investigations.

Emeakayi explained that the attack occurred during Operation Udo Ga-Achi, a joint security exercise involving the police, army, Department of State Services, civil defence, and the state security outfit.

He said the operatives were in pursuit of suspected cultists when they traced them into a residential compound where the corps members lived.

“While they were acting within the law, their conduct in that instance was unacceptable. Immediately the incident was reported, we moved swiftly to arrest the operatives and initiate disciplinary measures,” he stated.

He disclosed that the assaulted corps member, alongside NYSC officials, had been invited to give a firsthand account of the incident, adding that disciplinary action against the erring operatives was underway.

Emeakayi also clarified that Operation Udo Ga-Achi is a multi-agency task force, while Agunechemba is Anambra’s statutory security outfit established under the State Homeland Security Law 2025.

Reaffirming its commitment to citizens’ safety, the Anambra State Government said it would not tolerate abuse of power by security operatives.
