Abia State governor, Dr Alex Otti, has enthused that the achievements being credited/ascribed to his administration would not have been made without the contribution and support of the State legislature.
The governor spoke during an expanded weekly State Executive Council meeting, specially convened to mark the second anniversary of his administration, while assenting to 18 Bills passed into laws by the extant 24-member 8th Abia State House of Assembly, controlled by the state ruling Labour Party.
All the 18 Bills, now laws, which were executive-sponsored, also brought to 30 the total number of executive bills sponsored and passed into laws by this extant legislature, led by the Speaker, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa of the Labour Party, who represents Aba South Constituency.
, Otti said: “Without legislative support, much of whatever is achieved during our short 24 months in office would have cost a lot of money. And, I have no doubt that the volume of legislations we have put in place will guarantee the sustenance of the gains that have been made over the last two years.”
He added that these new laws encapsulate thoughtful legislative provisions for achieving his government’s vision in critical areas such as performance-based administration, accountability, and delivery of good governance.
According to him, the enacted legislations align with the survey of the community and neighborhood development proposals, captured in his manifesto, including the recommendations of the transition committee report of 2023.
He, therefore, lauded the State House of Assembly for its focused leadership and commitment to the new Abia, and for providing strong legislative support to the programme and policy outlays of his-led Executive arm of the State government, stating that his conviction is that his leadership of the State will not just endure, but will bear even greater fruits in the years ahead.
“Whether we are looking at managing infrastructure, expansion of protocols, greater development roadmap, or smaller agencies of government, a lot is changing in terms of development approach in our urban and semi-urban centres.”
While presenting the passed 18 Bills for Otti’s assent, Speaker Emeruwa described them as abstract but very impactful on the people, noting that some of them are, however, amendments to existing laws.
“The results and effects of these 18 Bills, some of which are amendments to the old laws, will be visible and impactful on the lives of the people,” adding that the Otti administration has brought joy in the State and assured of the continuous support of the Legislature to the Executive.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, said that the Otti administration is run on transparency and policy-driven laws that are in line with his campaign manifesto.
He listed some of the 18 Bills signed into law to include: Abia State Senior Citizens Law 2025, Abia State Road Maintenance Agency (Repeal) Law 2025, Abia State Estate Development Agency (Repeal) Law 2025, Abia State Orientation Agency (Amendment) Law 2025, among others.
