Osinbajo seeks urgent action on economy, ASUU strike

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has emphasised the need for the Federal government to urgently take steps to arrest some of the crises facing the country, especially the worsening economic downturn and the protracted industrial strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Osinbajo spoke when he received members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), led by their Chairman, Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, who paid him a visit in his office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to felicitate with him on his return to the office after a thigh surgery he recently underwent.

The interaction between Osinbajo and the Governors was contained in a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Mr. Laolu Akande.

The Vice President and the Governors agreed to engage these and other pressing issues further with a view to bringing urgent resolution for the benefit of the Nigerian people.

According to the Vice President: “We all need to work together on these critical issues. We need to think through things, and we need to do it fast.”

While welcoming the Governors, Osinbajo expressed his appreciation for the visit and the good wishes.

He also commended the expertise of Nigerian doctors, and the availability of cutting-edge medical facilities existing in the country.

He, however, regretted that doctors are restrained by regulations from advertising and as a result many people are unaware of the level of quality medical services available locally.

Present at the meeting were Governors Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi); Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti); Simon Lalong (Plateau); Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos); Muhammad Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa); Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq (Kwara); Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger); Dapo Abiodun (Ogun); Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa) and Deputy Ebonyi Governor, Kelechi Igwe.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Bagudu said the visit to the State House, Abuja, was to felicitate with the Vice President in his recovery following a medical procedure in a local hospital and for particularly showing confidence in the Nigerian medical establishment.

“We had the opportunity for him to tell us how capable the team that helped out and also commend that many Nigerians should take steps to find out the amazing opportunities and capacity that is in the medical establishment. We felicitated with him, and we thank him for his leadership of the Nigerian National National Economic Council,” he said.
