Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have urged the Federal government to implement the promised N77,000 allowance to alleviate their current economic hardship.
The corps members took to their social media handles to share their concerns on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
They lamented that despite government’s approval of the increased allowance in July 2024, they are still receiving the old allowance of N33,000.
According to them, the old N33,000 allowance is no longer sustainable due to high transportation, feeding, and NYSC contribution costs.
“Three months after, the Federal government still believes that N33k is enough for NYSC members to survive,” X user @NoorAjuwon wrote.
“How can we even concentrate on our primary assignment with N33k in this current economic situation?” @Arbdoolbasid_Jr. tweeted.
@blazzin_225 described the situation as “suffering and wickedness” due to bad NYSC lodges, dilapidated bathrooms and toilets, and starvation
“See us as your children too. We’re dying,” another X user urged President Bola Tinubu
The corps members thus appealed to the government to implement the N77,000 allowance and improve their well-being and productivity during national service year.
The Federal government’s approval of the increased allowance in July 2024 has yet to be reflected in the NYSC members’ stipends.
