Nigerian doctors separate conjoined twins in Yola

A team of Nigerian surgeons have successfully separated four-month-old conjoined twins at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Yola, Adamawa State.

Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Auwal Abubakar, disclosed in Yola that the operation was conducted on May 14, adding that it took about four hours.

“We had a successful operation of conjoined female twins (omphilopagus). The development was recorded following a team work from different medical units,” he said.

Abubakar added that the twins have an “excellent” chance of survival.

He also called for more efforts to reduce the rate of medical tourism in the country, adding that Nigerian doctors are capable of competing with their counterparts in developed countries if given the necessary support.

“We must do well and reduce the number of people about to ask seeking medical treatment,” he said.

This is the second successful case of such surgery carried out in the hospital.
