Nationwide blackout looms as Seplat/NNPC JV shuts gas plant

A national power outage is imminent in the country following the shutdown of a critical gas production facility belonging to Seplat Energy and its joint venture partner – the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd.

As a result, some power generation companies, which rely on this supply may experience gas unavailability, and consequently impact electricity generation levels within the timeframe.

Seplat is a key supplier of gas into the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC) pipeline network.

NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, who confirmed the shutdown in a statement, said the plant shutdown was necessary to enable the companies carry out routine maintenance.

According to him, the scheduled maintenance, which began today, February 12, and is expected to last until February 15, 2026, has temporarily throttled the gas supply required to fire some of the nation’s key thermal power plants.

He stated: “Periodic maintenance of this nature is essential to sustain optimal system performance, strengthen operational resilience, and minimise the risk of unplanned outages.

“During the four-day maintenance period, there will be a temporary reduction in gas supply into the NGIC pipeline network.

“As a result, some power generation companies reliant on this supply may experience reduced gas availability, which could modestly impact electricity generation levels within the timeframe.

“NNPC Ltd and Seplat Energy are working closely to ensure that the maintenance is executed safely and completed as scheduled. In parallel, NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML) is engaging alternative gas suppliers to mitigate anticipated supply gaps and maintain stability across the network.”

Upon completion of the maintenance exercise, he said full gas supply into the NGIC system is expected to resume promptly, enabling affected power generation companies to return to normal operations.
