Naira abuse: Bobrisky files notice of appeal, challenges conviction

A controversial cross-dresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye aka Bobrisky, has filed a notice of appeal challenging his conviction on four counts of currency abuse.

In the appeal filed by his lawyer Bimbo Kusanu, the cross-dresser seeks to overturn the six-month prison sentence slammed on him, proposing instead a fine of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000) for each count.

On April 12, 2024, Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Lagos, sentenced Bobrisky to six months’ imprisonment without an option of a fine for abusing the Nigerian currency.

The judge had emphasized that the verdict aimed to deter others from similar actions of currency abuse and mutilation.

A week earlier, precisely on April 5, Bobrisky had pleaded guilty to the four-count charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
