The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians over the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachet, describing it as a public health danger capable of causing life-threatening illnesses.
In a statement released Friday on its official Facebook page, the agency disclosed that Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, the authorised manufacturer of Cowbell products, stopped producing Cowbell “Our Milk” as far back as September 2023, replacing it with Cowbell “Our Creamy Goodness.” Despite this, counterfeiters have continued to flood the market with fake versions of the discontinued brand.
According to NAFDAC, the counterfeit sachets illegally bear the Cowbell brand name, the agency’s registration number, and packaging designs in an attempt to deceive unsuspecting consumers. The product details cited include: “Cowbell ‘Our Milk’ 12g sachet, purportedly manufactured by Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, with production date 04/2025 and expiry date 12/2028.”
The agency stressed that the consumption of such counterfeits poses grave health hazards. “The risks include food-borne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, and in severe cases, death,” NAFDAC warned, noting that infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are particularly at risk.
It further explained that counterfeit milk may contain toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, or diluted ingredients that compromise nutritional value and endanger lives.
Calling for vigilance, NAFDAC urged consumers and healthcare professionals to immediately report suspicious products.
“Any suspicion of the sale of substandard and counterfeit food products should be reported to the nearest NAFDAC office by calling 0800-162-3322 or sending an email to sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng,” the agency stated.
