Matawalle recants, goes to court after conceding defeat in Zamfara guber poll

Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, may have changed his mind about the outcome of the March 18 governorship poll in the State, in which he lost a second term bid.

A joint letter from Matawalle and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) demanding a review of the results governorship poll has signalled that the duo could be heading to court, after initially accepting defeat.

In the letter signed by U. O Sule (SAN), the party and its governorship candidate alleged that the declaration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate as the winner of the election is a complete negation of the Electoral Act and other extant rules guiding the conduct of the election in Nigeria, insisting that a winner should not have emerged from the governorship election as 85,062 votes were cancelled across the state while the lead margin was put at 65,750.

They also raised concern that the INEC declared a winner of the governorship polls when the election was yet to be conducted at units in Birnin Magaji with a total number of 46,000 registered voters, wondering why INEC rejected a collated result of the Maradun local government, where it polled 95,506 to defeat the PDP, who scored only 618 votes and instead used alternative data from the server to declare the result of the local government.

They urged the commission to exercise its powers as contained in Section 65(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended) by reviewing its decision in the declaration made.
