LUTH grapples with staff shortage in critical department

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba, has announced a shortage of staff members in the department of Anaesthesia.

Anaesthesia is the medical department concerned with the perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery.

The Head, Department of Anaesthesia, Dr AA Adesida, made the announcement via a memo dated October 18, 2022.

Adesida, in the letter addressed to the Chief Medical Director of LUTH, said the commencement of late elective cases may be refused due to the shortage of staff in the Intensive Care Unit.

The letter read: “We wish to bring to the notice of the surgical units and the nursing Departments in the modular theatre, KidsOP, Ophthalmology and Orthopaedic unit in the hospital of acute shortage of staff in the Department of Anaesthesia.

“Commencement of late elective cases may be refused as those on call who will normally take over from those that have ended their shift are down to one or two residents in Intensive Care Unit.

“Therefore, we advise one long and one short cases for our elective list not lasting beyond 5pm.

“All emergency cases shall be attended to as planned.”
