Labour Party (LP)’s Kevin Chukwu has clinched the Enugu East senate post, defeating incumbent Senator Chimaroke Nnamani of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Kevin polled 69,136 votes to defeat Nnamani, a former governor of the State who scored 48,701 votes.
The election was conducted on Saturday after it was moved from February 25 due to the death of Oyibo Chukwu, LP’s former flag bearer for the race.
Oyibo Chukwu was murdered a few days before the presidential and National Assembly elections, after which his younger brother won the party’s ticket at a fresh primary election, to run for the seat.
Meanwhile, Nnamani has conceded defeat to Chukwu, saying the outcome of the election reflected the wishes of the majority of the constituents, adding: “The people have spoken”.
In a congratulatory message to the new Senator-elect, Nnamani said: “The result of the election is in tandem with the rave of the moment in the Southeast zone who have identified with Labour Party. A contrary result would have negated the trend.
“I wish the Enugu East Senator-elect a successful tenure in the upper legislative chamber”.
He also told his supporters to remain calm and accept the outcome of the election in good faith.
