June 12: IBB hurt us publicly, apologised privately, Abiola’s son Lekan reveals

Lekan Abiola, one of the sons of MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, has revealed that former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babagida (IBB), has apologized privately for his action.

Lekan disclosed this while speaking at the MKO Abiola Memorial Symposium in Lagos.

According to him, the family felt a huge sense of relief following Babangida’s public acknowledgement and apology over his role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.

He noted that IBB has kept in touch with his family.

“We returned from the United States of America; we have met IBB, and he has apologized privately to us.

“Before now, for the private apology, there was nothing we could do about that. It is as though someone punched you in public and said sorry in private.”

President Bola Tinubu awarded a posthumous honour to Abiola’s late wife Kudirat, and other nationalists during the Democracy Day celebration on Thursday.
