Jega warns against confirming Onochie for INEC job

A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has warned the Senate against confirming the appointment of a presidential aide, Lauretta Onochie, as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission to avoid a backlash.

Jega said President Muhammadu Buhari could withdraw Onochie’s nomination and replace her with another female from Delta State, noting that there are several other eligible women for the job.

There has been a groundswell opposition to Onochie’s nomination for the INEC job, chiefly over her perceived partisanship.

But last Thursday, Onochie had, during her screening by the Senate Committee on INEC, denied being a member of the All Progressives Congress since 2019.

However, Jega noted that the controversy with Onochie is avoidable.
