The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has declared support for the establishment of State police, saying the initiative, if properly implemented, would significantly improve security across the country.
NEF spokesperson, Prof. Abubakar Jiddere, made this known at a press conference to announce the maiden edition of the Northern Nigeria Investment and Industrialisation Summit, scheduled for September 29 and 30, 2025.
Jiddere noted that the Forum has confidence in the idea, provided it is created in line with existing laws and regulations.
“If State police is established within the framework of the law, it will be a welcome development capable of dramatically improving security in the region,” he said.
He explained that the summit, jointly organised by NEF, the 19 northern states, and the New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC), has been in the works for over 18 months.
According to him, the event is designed to launch a patriotic agenda to strengthen the North’s development drive while creating new opportunities for citizens, Nigeria, and international partners.
Describing the summit as more than just an economic gathering, Jiddere said it represents “a fresh vision, an economic call to action, an appeal to conscience, and a strategic plan to unlock the promise of Northern Nigeria.”
