Members of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), on Thursday, staged a protest at the Dowen College, Lagos, demanding justice for the late student, Sylvester Oromoni.
Sylvester is from the Ijaw-speaking tribe in Delta State. The protest comes after the Lagos State government exonerated five students and staff of the school arrested over the death of the 12-year-old student.
The protesters, dressed in black attires, were drumming and waving their native flags and demanding justice over the death of the student, whom they described as their son.
An unidentified spokesman of the protesters said: “We are here today to express our anger and our grievances with the fake and corrupt report released by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution that this school (Dowen College), where cultists are being trained and recruited; that the five people that killed our son; without trial, without concluding investigation; they said they cleared this school to open.
“If they open this school, the whole Ijaw Nation will come to this school. Let them try it and see. If they open this school on Monday (January 10, 2022), the whole Ijaw Nation will come here. We will carry our school bags; we will carry our feeding bottles; we will carry our food and join them in this school.
“Let them bring armoured tanks and put one here, one in the hostel; we have the capacity. If they don’t give us justice; this school cannot be opened…”
They warned, particularly the governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, that Dowen College will not have peace until justice is done on the matter.
Finally they condemned the manner in which the suspects were cleared of any wrongdoing in the matter of the death of the student.
Sylvester Oromoni died on November 30, last year, allegedly from the beatings he received from fellow students.
