Gunmen attack private varsity in Kaduna, abduct students

The tranquility of the Green Field University, Kaduna State, was shattered on Tuesday when some gunmen invaded the institution, and abducted an unspecified number of students.

Green Field University, established about three years ago, is located along the Kaduna–Abuka Highway in Chikun Local Government Area, and also the first private university in the State.

The Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the incident.

Reports said the gunmen stormed the university Tuesday  night shooting sporadically, before taking away some of the students.

The locals said the university with about forty students population does not have enough security, despite being located in one of the epicentres of kidnapping, a situation which they believe made it easy for the bandits to gain access into the institution.

Indeed Kaduna State has been facing series of attacks by bandits including assaults on schools.

On March 11, bandits attacked the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization Afaka in the Igabi Local Government Area and whisked away 39 students.

While t10 out of the number have been released, the fate of the remaining ones still hangs in the balance.
