A pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Egbe Omo Yoruba in North America (EOYNA), has declared that, for insecurity to be addressed in Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari must address the claim by retired Commodore Olakunle Olawunmi, who said sponsors of Boko Haram are within his (Buhari’s) government.
The group, in a statement issued Monday by its National President, Dr. Durojaye Odimayo Akindutire, maintained that President Buhari must fish out those supposed sponsors and deal with them accordingly for all Nigerians to see.
Egbe Omo Yoruba, while lamenting the high rate of insecurity in the country, expressed surprise at the attack on the Nigerian Defense Academy, Kaduna, in which two resident officers were killed, describing it as the most audacious security breach in the history of the country.
It pointed out that Olawunmi’s interview on Channels Television would go down as one of the most memorable in the history of Nigeria.
Part of the statement reads: “It was remarkable for his candour and his no-holds-barred revelations, which peeled away the layers of lies, which have shrouded the bewildering insecurity that has enveloped Nigeria over the last several years.
“And though the menace started under previous administrations, it has spread like wild fire to become unmanageable with the present government.
“So potent and disturbing were the disclosures of Comd. Olawunmi about what he characterised as ‘The center of gravity’ of Boko Haram insurgency and other murderous rampages in the country that the interviewer was obliged to ask him whether ‘he was not afraid for his life’. To which he replied: ‘If I tell the truth, I will die one day, and if I don’t tell the truth I will still die’.
“Without a doubt, this interview is the most consequential in this country in a long time. The kernel of what he revealed is that ‘the center of gravity of insecurity of all stripes in Nigeria is the sponsors’. This is what connects the dots. And until and unless these sponsors are exposed and brought to heel, Nigeria will never know peace and will continue to regress.”
