President Muhammadu Buhari has been asked to tender a public apology to Nigerians over the biting hardship and insecurity beleaguering the country, amid his inability to fulfill own campaign promises.
Recalling that Buhari, in 2015, promised Nigerians adequate security as well as meaningful source of livelihood while seeking their votes, the group, Middle Belt United Assembly (MBUA), noted that presently, any attempt to chronicle his achievements would only be an effort in documenting a ‘bestseller’ of a failed messiah, as the great media sage, Nosa Igiebor, would put it.
The group’s president, Comrade Moses Mwarga Aji, speaking with journalists in Kaduna, Thursday, lamented that, presently, Nigerians go to bed with empty stomachs as prices of food and allied products skyrocket beyond their reach in comparison to where Buhari met them on assumption of office, adding that even with the biting hunger, they, especially in the Northern region, now live in perpetual fear of the unknown and cannot sleep with two eyes closed as insecurity becomes the order of the day.
“We’ve called on President Buhari to tender unreserved public apology to Nigerians over his failed promises on security, economy, fighting corruption…from bad in 2015 to worst now,” he stressed.
Speaking on the forthcoming general elections in 2023, Aji urged the international community to mount pressure on Buhari to secure the country, with a view to ensuring free and fair polls.
“The nation is in suspense over the fate of 2023 general elections as some prominent Nigerians are expressing fear that elections may not hold because of insecurity. Elections must hold as planned by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Nigerians will not accept postponement of elections,” he further stressed.
Particularly, he urged Buhari to provide adequate security to the north-central zone of the country ala Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger, among others to guarantee peaceful elections in the zone, noting that “the way things stand now in the country, Nigerians may not remember Mr. President when he leaves office. They may remember him only when insecurity, corruption, hardship are mentioned,” saying “Please, Mr President, use the remaining few months at your disposal to correct and reset Nigeria on the path of progress, unity and development, so as to see if we could have something good to remember Your Excellency.”
