Telecoms giant, Globacom, has signed a multi-million dollar contract with top Chinese technology firm Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., to provide a robust and permanent telecommunications backbone and last-mile broadband solutions to the Nigerian oil industry, as well as several businesses on the coastal states of Nigeria.
With the signing of the contract on April 24 at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, Globacom will commence the building of a submarine cable along the Nigerian coast called Glo 2. This will connect from the Glo1 landing station at Alpha Beach in Lagos, and run across the Atlantic Coast of Nigeria to land at the coast of Akwa Ibom State.
Globacom’s Regional Director, Technical, Mr. Sanjib Roy, explained at the signing ceremony, that the infrastructure would be the first to provide dedicated submarine optical fiber to oil platforms to support the growth of the Nigerian economy and allow for the social empowerment of the communities in oil producing regions.
He noted that it will improve productivity in the oil value chain, by making it easy for explorers to upload and download heavy data between onshore and remote oil platforms at the speed of light.
