MKO Abiola on the so-called removal of oil subsidy aka regular pump price hike during an interview with NTA Network Service, in 1993
“I’m a chartered accountant I deal with figures, data and facts, you don’t expect me to sit here with you and tell you if I’m going to increase the pump price of fuel or not. Petrol is a strategic consumption, very sensitive, so one has to be careful before any major decision is made. If I’m voted in as president, Insh Alla, before I make any decision I will look at all the papers first,, meet with NNPC, ministry of petroleum, the central bank, labour and all stakeholders in the petroleum industry to know the exact production and cost of production so that nobody is cooking any figure anywhere. We will bring out all the papers for all Nigerians to see if there’s a need for any price increase or not, you can’t shave a man’s head in his absence….
