Fire guts section of Onitsha Main Market

A fire outbreak has razed parts of the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State.

The fire, which reportedly started from one of the buildings at about 6:20am, later escalated into a nearby building.

The cause of fire could be ascertained immediately.

However, residents, passersby and men of the fire service had swiftly taken positions to fight the blaze, and stop it from spreading further.

Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident in a short message on Friday.

Chiketa urged residents and members of the public to remain calm as the fire fighters battled to quench the inferno.

“Anambra State Fire Service is currently on intervention at the scene of the fire outbreak at Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, Onitsha.

“The distress call came at 0620am today, and our firefighters deployed immediately.”

He further urged the general public to remain calm as the situation is under control.
