Fire has gutted a section of the Nkpor Main Market in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, and destroyed goods worth several millions of Naira.
The Wednesday fire at the market, near the Onitsha commercial city, has thrown the traders into sadness. The inferno began around 2 am on the day and gutted more than 30 shops. But it took the traders hours to put it out.
According to the market chairman Paul Okafor, the fire started in a cold room shop. He said the affected place was loaded with paints, shoe leather, and polish among others. While a final estimation of the value of goods destroyed was not ascertained as of press time, he said the burnt goods would not be less than N300 million.
The market chairman called on the government to station firefighter vehicles under the flyover bridge at Nkpor Main Market to serve the area, lamenting how long it took them to put out the fire.
Police authorities also confirmed the fire incident.
