FG mulls relocating Suleja prison after jailbreak

* Minister confirms 13 inmates re-arrested out of the 119 escapees

The Federal Government has said it is considering relocating the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, following the jailbreak that saw the escape of about 119 inmates.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed during a visit on Thursday, that the facility houses 499 inmates, over and above its capacity for 250 inmates.

He confirmed that a total of 119 inmates had escaped, adding, however, that 13 have been re-arrested.

His reaction followed reports that the facility management would publish the names and pictures of the escapee inmates.

Earlier media reports had claimed that 118 inmates had escaped from the centre following heavy rainfall on Wednesday night.

The torrential downpour had wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, resulting in extensive damage to the facility including a breach in the perimeter fence, allowing some of the inmates to flee.

The spokesperson for the NCoS, Federal Capital Territory Command, Adamu Duza, reportedly said that the command is collaborating with other security agencies to recapture the remaining fleeing inmates, adding that their biodata would soon be made public.
