The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has disbursed N3.9 billion to settle outstanding pension arrears owed to 91,146 retirees under the Federal Government’s Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS), marking another milestone in the ongoing effort to uphold the welfare of senior citizens who dedicated decades of service to the nation.
The Directorate of PTAD explained that the payment covers verified arrears across multiple pension departments, including the Civil Service Pension Department (CSPD), Police Pension Department (PPD), Parastatals Pension Department (PaPD), and the Power and Transport Pension Department (PTPD). The agency noted that the funds were released following the completion of rigorous verification and confirmation exercises designed to ensure accuracy and transparency in its payment system.
PTAD emphasized that the disbursement forms part of the government’s wider commitment to clearing inherited pension liabilities and restoring dignity to retirees who have experienced delayed payments.
According to the Directorate, the cleared arrears include entitlements that resulted from various reasons such as omission during previous payroll consolidations, computation adjustments, and backlog issues identified during the ongoing Expanded Verification Project.
Many beneficiaries have expressed relief over the payment, describing it as a welcome development at a time of rising living expenses and economic pressures.
Retirees noted that the settlement of these arrears would cushion their financial burdens and enable them to meet essential needs such as healthcare, rent, and household expenses.
PTAD reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a fully sanitized and fraud-free pension administration system.
The agency stated that its reforms including digitization of records, biometric verification, and continuous data cleanup are aimed at eliminating ghost pensioners and ensuring that only eligible retirees receive payments.
The Directorate also assured pensioners that efforts are ongoing to resolve all outstanding verified arrears and to sustain regular monthly pension payments without interruption.
It restated its dedication to transparency, accountability, and service delivery as it continues the task of repositioning the Defined Benefit Scheme.
With the latest N3.9billion payout, PTAD says it remains on track in its mandate to secure the rights and entitlements of Nigeria’s retired public servants, many of whom have waited years for closure on their pension claims.
