Ex-lawmaker Opeyemi Bamidele shot in Ekiti

A former member of the House of Representatives and former governorship aspirant, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele and two other unidentified persons were Friday shot at a reception for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, at the party’s secretariat in Ado-Ekiti.

The shots were allegedly fired by a Mobile policeman on illegal duty.

The cop was reportedly trying to protect VIPs from being mobbed by touts who were seeking to obtain money when he fired shots that accidentally hit Bamidele on the hand. One other person was hit in the chest area.

“It looked like the touts tried to take his riffle from him and in the process the shots were fired,” a source said.

Angry party men almost lynched the policeman after the incident, but he was safely taken away by his colleagues.

Fayemi, Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, deputy governorship candidate, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi were not wounded.

Sources in Ado-Ekiti said that Bamidele was taken away in one of Akeredolu’s vehicles to a local hospital after the incident. The condition of the others wounded remained unclear at the hospital.
