Ekiti court sends farmer to prison for allegedly raping 65-year-old woman

A Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, has remanded a 45-year-old farmer, Gbenga Abajigbin, for raping a 65-year-old woman.

The police charged Abajigbin with rape.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sodiq Adeniyi, told the court that the farmer committed the offence at Ipole-Iloro in Ekiti State in April, 2024.

Adeniyi said the victim told the suspect to help her fumigate her farm.

“When the suspect got to the farm, he called the victim to bring the chemical to the site. On getting to the farm, he raped her,” the prosecutor disclosed.

The offence, he, said, contravenes the provisions of Section 265(2) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The Chief Magistrate, Dolamu Babalogbon, on Friday, ordered that Abajigbin be remanded in a correctional centre, pending legal advice.

Babalogbon, who did not take the plea of the farmer, ordered the police to return the case file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in Ekiti State for legal advice.

Babalogbon, therefore, adjourned the case to July 31 for mention.
