* Hours after handing over to Soludo, losing immunity
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Thursday evening, arrested the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano.
He was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, while waiting to board a flight to Houston, Texas, USA.
Reports say the former governor had been on the watch list of the Commission months before the expiration of his tenure as governor.
In a letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) dated November 15, 2021, the EFCC had requested the NIS to place the governor on a watch list and inform it anytime he is travelling out of the country from any of the international airports and other points of entry and exit.
Sources said the request was an indication that the agency may have been discreetly investigating the governor and possibly had intelligence that he planned to leave the country after handing over to Soludo.
Obiano’s aides had described the EFCC request to the NIS as being “politically motivated”.
