Court passes death sentence on Police Inspector convicted for murder in Asaba


A Delta State High Court sitting at Asaba has sentenced a police Inspector, Ubi Ebri, to death for murder.

The police inspector was accused of killing a young man named Mr. Ibeh Onyeka, a telephone repairer and seller on April 5, 2023, while on a stop and search duty along the Ugbolu Asaba Road, in the State capital.

The incident caused pandemonium as youths took to the streets in protest against the killing.

The Prosecution led by a Director in the Ministry of Justice, E.H Edema, said that the defendant was part of the Police Patrol team that mounted the stop and search exercise.

The deceased and his wife were said to be driving from Ugbolu to Asaba when they were flagged down by the police team for search.

The defendant was said to have opened fire on the vehicle, and the victim hit in the head by a bullet.

The wife of the deceased, who sat in the front seat with him was, however, unhurt.

The court presided over by Justice C. D Diai convicted and sentenced the defendant to death.
