Concern as two planes brush wings at Lagos Int’l Airport

Two aircraft belonging to Middle East Airlines (MEA) and Turkisk Airlines tipped each other’s wings at the apron of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Ikeja (MMIA), Lagos on Wednesday.

The incident referred to in aviation parlance as ground collision was confirmed by the Regional Manager, South West, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Victoria Shin-Abah.

She said the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has launched investigation into the incident

The incident reportedly occurred when Middle East airplane was about to park on the apron while the Turkish Airlines plane was departing from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

The two airplanes are currently parked at the Lagos airport awaiting assessment of the extent of damage.

Ground Collision (GTCOL), in aviation sector, occurs while an aircraft is taxiing to or from a runway in use.

Earlier this week, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, spoke about plans by the Federal government to reopen the country’s airports to international flights.

Mustapha, who is also the Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce (PTF) on COVID-19, said talks are currently ongoing between PTF and the Aviation ministry.

While the Nigerian government gave a green light for the commencement of local flights, international flight was still restricted.
