The Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State has taken steps to prevent cholera spread, including the suspension of food vendors in schools within its territory.
The move, it said, is to ensure the safety of pupils and students by encouraging them to bring their own food to school.
Chairman of the council, Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi, revealed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Egunjobi highlighted the council’s efforts in sensitizing market stakeholders and schools through radio campaigns to prevent the spread of cholera within the community.
He emphasized the importance of early detection and prevention measures to combat the disease.
To further ensure the well-being of children, schools were inspected to ensure they met health and environmental standards.
Market traders were also educated on the importance of environmental hygiene to prevent the spread of cholera.
Egunjobi urged residents to prioritize hygiene in food preparation and consumption. He emphasized the need for collaboration among various stakeholders, including landlord associations, to prevent the spread of the disease.
The cholera outbreak has been a significant concern, with over 30 states affected and Lagos recording 24 deaths from 417 cases.
The measures aim to curb the spread and protect the community from further harm.
