CBN mourns its former governor, Adamu Ciroma

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced the passing of its former governor, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, which sad event occurred on July 5, 2018.

The apex bank, in a statement, nonetheless eulogized Mallam Ciroma, saying he contributed immensely to the greatness of the CBN.

Below is the full text of the statement:

“With a deep sense of loss, the Governor and Management of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announce the passage of Mallam Adamu Ciroma, who died on July 5, 2018.  He was the Governor of the Bank from September 24, 1975 to June 28 1977.

“Mallam Ciroma was born on November 20 1934 in Potiskum, Yobe State. He was a graduate of University of Ibadan and served in different capacities in the Public Service.  He was appointed to the Board of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1970 where he served as a Director before his appointment as the Governor in 1975. He also served as Minister in the Ministries of Industry, Agriculture and Finance and on the Board of several companies.

“Until his demise, Mallam Ciroma was still of immense service to the Bank. He was a firm believer in the sanctity and independence of the CBN.

“While we mourn the loss of a very good man, an astute central banker and a patriot, we also celebrate his remarkable life and contribution to the banking industry in Nigeria.

“He is survived by his wife and children and has since been buried according to Islamic rites.

“We pray Almighty Allah to grant his family and the nation the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

Meanwhile, former President Goodluck Jonathan has lamented the death of Mallam Adamu Ciroma at the age of 83 years, describing the former minister and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria as a  patriot who played historic roles in Nigeria’s development.

In a statement of condolence to the family of the deceased and the people of Yobe State, Jonathan noted that Ciroma left enviable records while serving Nigeria in various capacities.

According to a statement issued by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, the former President said: “Mallam Ciroma was a well-respected statesman and committed patriot who creditably acquitted himself and left enviable records while serving our nation in various capacities.

“It is almost impossible to find a man who bestrode and dominated the worlds of journalism and banking as he did. Mallam Ciroma played historic roles in the social and political development of Nigeria and his death is a sad loss to our nation.

“He will be remembered for his sagacity, leadership credentials and worthy contributions to the nation’s growth and development,” he stated.
