CBN, DSS mute over alleged arrest, probe of Deputy Gov Aishah Ahmad

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has remained silent over the reported arrest of its Deputy Governor for Financial System Stability, Aishah Ahmad, at the weekend.

Reports on Sunday claimed that the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested Ahmad and was questioned over certain transactions during the tenure of the suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Indeed one report claimed that Ahmad was quizzed over how $300 million meant to complete the acquisition of Union Bank was raised by Titan Bank.

Yet another report alleged that Ahmad was probed by Jim Obazee, the special investigator appointed by President Bola Tinubu and the DSS at the headquarters of the secret police.

It was, however, stated that she was not the only CBN top shot questioned, as other deputy governors were also invited to clarify certain transactions in the last eight years under Emefiele’s leadership.

As of Sunday afternoon though, a reporting a source said Ahmad had been released by the DSS and the special investigator.

The CBN spokesperson, Isa Abdulmumin, could not be reached for comments on the matter.

Similarly, the Department of State Services (DSS) remained mum on the reported situation.

The DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, reportedly said he could not confirm or deny that Ahmad was in their custody or has been invited for questioning.

He, However, added that in the course of any investigation, people can be invited for questioning and those invitations are carried out within the ambit of the law.

This is coming about two months after the secret service arrested Ahmad’s former boss at the CBN, Godwin Emefiele. He has been in the DSS custody since then.

Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was first charged with possession of a firearm but was later charged with N6.9 billion fraud.
