Burkina Faso alleges fresh coup plot against junta leader Traoré

Authourities in Burkina Faso say security services have stopped a new plot to assassinate the country’s military leader, Ibrahim Traoré.

Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, said this on Tuesday, alleging, that former leader Paul Henri Damiba, who was removed from power in September 2022, was behind the plot.

Sana said: “Our intelligence services intercepted this operation in its final stages. The plan was to assassinate the head of state and then carry out attacks on other strategic targets, including key institutions and civilian figures.”

The minister also alleged that the operation was funded from neighboring Ivory Coast.

At the time of this report, neither Damiba nor officials from Ivory Coast had responded to the allegations.

After discovering the alleged plot, Burkina Faso’s authorities increased security at government buildings and boosted border checks, especially along the border with Ivory Coast.

The government said investigations are still underway to find everyone involved.
