Buhari summons security meeting after Kuje prison attack

Still smarting from the embarrassment, shock and disappointment occasioned by the Tuesday bloody attacks on the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja, President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday summoned an emergency National Security Council meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Some cabinet ministers and all security and service chiefs were in attendance at the meeting.

Others at the security meeting were Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, was represented at the meeting.

The meeting was meant to deliberate on the nation’s security challenges occasioned by the recent attacks on the Kuje prison by suspected terrorists, following which some Boko Haram suspects escaped.

The prison was invaded by gunmen on Tuesday and scores of inmates, including 64 Boko Haram commanders, as well as other hardened criminals, were released.

The President visited the Custodial Centre on Wednesday, where he expressed disappointment with the nation’s intelligence system.

He said: “I am disappointed with the intelligence system. How can terrorists organize, have weapons, attack a security installation and get away with it?”
