The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has faulted the Federal Government for appointing persons without first degree into the governing councils of Federal universities.
The President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed this position in a media interview.
He added that the same rule is applicable to various state governments regarding their respective universities.
According to him, the agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU is that any person to be appointed into governing councils of any federal university must qualify as a member of congregation of that university, adding that he must be a holder of at least a first degree.
He explained that it is difficult for somebody to effectively superintend over a system he or she does not have a taste of as a student, let alone understand such system.
He said ASUU completely disagrees on the use of political considerations and party affiliation to appoint people into what he described as sensitive positions such as governing councils of universities.
