The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports claiming that a man was shot dead inside the Mammy Market located within the Ojo Military Cantonment in Lagos State.
Reports had earlier alleged that gunmen invaded the market last Saturday and killed a butcher.
However, spokesperson for the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, said the deceased, identified as Rilwan Adekunle, was not killed within the market premises or inside the barracks.
Yahaya stated that investigations revealed that the incident occurred near the Mammy Market abattoir gate and was linked to suspected cult-related activities.
Yahaya added that troops immediately responded to the scene and took the victim to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre — the nearest health facility — where he was confirmed dead.
He said: “On 18 October 2025, we received a distress call about a shooting incident at a junction near the Mammy Market abattoir gate.
“Investigations reveal that the incident was a result of suspected cult related activities, which tragically led to the loss of life.
“Own standby team responded promptly, and upon arrival, the victim was rushed to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre, being the closest medical facility, as the perpetrators had fled the scene.
“The Nigerian Army is deeply saddened by the unfortunate loss of life and extends sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased.”
The army spokesman also urged the public and media outlets to verify information with relevant authorities before publication to avoid spreading misinformation.
