The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Enugu, Major-General Adamu Abubakar, has visited the Danare community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The GOC was accompanied on the visit by the member representing Boki I State Constituency at the Cross River State House of Assembly, Mrs. Itam Abang.
The visit, according to reports, was to get first hand information on the alleged destruction meted on the Boki people during a recent invasion of the area.
It was also to appraise and determine the level of protection that the military can provide residents of the area.
The Cameroonian Gendarmes had reportedly invaded the community and wrought damage to their crops, inflicting injuries as well to some Danare residents.
During the visit, the GOC went round the boundary with Cameroon, especially the small ‘plank bridge’, after which he assured them of adequate protection from the Nigerian military.
The GOC was quoted as saying: “The Army would maintain a steady presence in the community with a view to preventing further invasion and destruction of farmlands by the Gendarmes.”
The lawmaker, however, urged the people to be law abiding, and always report any encroachment to the military authorities.
Residents of Danare, according to her, are peace-loving people, hence the need to provide adequate security for them. The team interacted with the community heads, women and youth groups.
