Agency confirms fire outbreak at LASU Senate building

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), at the weekend, confirmed a fire outbreak on the main campus of the Lagos State University (LASU).

Reports say the blaze affected about seven offices including the Directorate of Internal Audit; Bursar’s office; Risk Insurance & Investment.

Others are Bursar Mini Registry and Reception; Payroll and Pension Unit; Budget and Budgetary Control and Deputy Director Office.

A preliminary report from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) indicated that the fire outbreak occurred in the Directorate of Internal Audit (Property management unit) office located on the 4th Floor of the building.

Investigation conducted by LASEMA’s response team suggested the immediate cause as power surge, which emanated from the said office.

The electric inverter from the office led to the incident, it was learnt.

Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said there was no casualty, adding, however, that the Directorate’s office was grossly affected by the inferno.

“The fire damage has extended to some of the ceiling claddings. The fire was promptly put out by the Lagos Fire Service and Agency responders.”

“A post disaster risk assessment is ongoing with a view at identifying any potential hazards and secondary incident.”

LASEMA boss said after the post disaster risk was conducted, it was concluded that “there is no threat of any possible ignition to any of the office.”

“The member of staffs were sensitized on safety and precautionary measures needed to avoid such incident,” he added.
