AFCON 2023: Equatorial Guinea to field Nigerian against Super Eagles


Less than two weeks on, the Super Eagles will again be in action as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in 2024 enters the second day.

The Super Eagles will face a rare opponents in Equatorial Guinea whom they had faced only twice at competitive level.

Reports say the Equatorial Guinean coach, Juan Micha Obiang, has included a player with Nigerian parentage in his 27-man squad. He is Mavin Jose Anieboh, who plays for Segunda Federacion Club, CD Illescas and has a Nigerian Urhobo father and Equatorial Guinea mother. If selected, Mavin also qualifies to play for Spain, as he was born in Madrid and has Spanish descent through his maternal grandfather.

This Africa Cup of Nations will be Equatorial Guinea’s 4th participation and they will face Nigeria first before playing against Guinea Bissau in their second match and Cote d’Ivoire in the last Group A game.
