Abia Reps member bemoans N2.1bn electricity bill on his constituents amid 5-year blackout

Member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Ibe Okwara Osonwa, has bemoaned the fate of his Ohafia kinsmen, who he said have been without public power supply for five years.

The lawmaker, who addressed a press conference in Umuahia, expressed shock that the community, which had not enjoyed electricity for over five years, was given a bill of N2.1billion.

Osonwa described the situation as strange, accusing the power distribution company of lack of empathy.

The lawmaker decried the instability in the power sector, saying that cost of production would continue to soar unless the power sector challenge is frontally tackled by the Federal government.

He described as unacceptable a situation where power alone gulps over 60% cost of production in the country.

According to the Labour Party lawmaker, Nigeria’s economic woes will be half solved if the power sector is fixed, as that would lead to increase in economic activities.

Responding to questions on some of his achievements so far in the green chamber, Osonwa expressed the hope that his bill, which proposes the conversion of Ohafia General Hospital to a Federal Medical Centre, to attend to the health needs of the people, would sail through.
