At last, FG okays pension for 2,141 civil war veterans

The Federal government has reabsorbed 2,141 civil war veterans into the Military Pensions Scheme, restoring long-denied benefits and addressing decades-long grievances among retired soldiers who fought during the Nigerian Civil War.

The move, confirmed by the Military Pensions Board (MPB), follows a nationwide verification and documentation exercise aimed at reconciling the records of ex-servicemen previously excluded from the scheme. According to the MPB, the decision forms part of a broader initiative to honour the sacrifices of all Nigerian veterans and ensure fairness in access to pension entitlements.

Chairman of the Board stated that the reintegration process will be phased, with the newly absorbed veterans expected to begin receiving payments in the coming weeks. He added that the development underscores the government’s commitment to welfare reforms within the armed forces and the ongoing effort to close administrative gaps in veterans’ compensation.

Beneficiaries, many of whom have waited decades for recognition, described the move as both historic and healing. A signal of renewed national unity and compassion for those who served during one of Nigeria’s most difficult periods.

This initiative also reflects a growing emphasis on inclusive welfare policies under the current administration, seeking to restore dignity to those who contributed to the nation’s stability. Analysts say it marks a crucial step toward reconciling the past and strengthening public trust in Nigeria’s social security institutions.
