There is palpable excitement in Arochukwu Kingdom, following the commencement of maiden edition of Ibom Waterfall Cup – Aro Female Football tournament – which kicked off on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at the Abia State College of Education Technical Arochukwu (ASCETA) football pitch.

The tournament’s sponsor, Mazi Engr. Ijere Kanu (Ugwu Aro), before taking the kick off to set the ball rolling, stated that he is sponsoring the competition to engage young girls in Arochukwu to participate in sports and recreation activities, with the aim to shift their focus away from social vices in the community.

He promised to make the tournament an annual event.

Regretting that planning for year’s event started late, he promised that next year’s will be bigger and better.

Some of the dignitaries who witnessed the commencement of the tourney included the Majority Leader of Abia State House of Assembly and member representing Arochukwu State Constituency, Hon Uchenna Okoro Kalu; the Chairman, Abia Arise, Hon. Nkem Okoro; Eze Ibom Isii, Mazi Amos Egbu Okoro; Eze Ezeagwu na Okwaragwu, Mazi Okorafor Uro, some Ndi Eze Ogo; former councilors and other football enthusiasts in the community.

The first match of the tournament between Ibom and Obinkita villages ended in a goalless draw.

Analysts have hailed the initiative, adding that it will serve as a talent hunt ground for female footballers preparatory to joining formalized football academies, and further rise to national/international prominence.

The final match is scheduled to hold on December 28, 2025. Trophies and cash prizes are to be won.
