GenCos lose N2.3tr amid incessant power outage

Power generation companies (GenCos) in Nigeria have lost about N2.31 trillion in the past 12 years consequent upon electricity that could not be distributed to consumers because of grid and operational failures.

The losses were recorded between 2013 and September 2025, according to new data released by the Association of Power Generation Companies, which represents all power producers in the country.

The figure covers power that was ready for generation but could not be taken by the national grid or delivered to users.
Records from the National Control Centre (NCC), presented during the association’s 20th anniversary event, showed that the problem of stranded electricity has continued to weaken Nigeria’s electricity market.
