Lagos announces major traffic diversions, waterway closures

  • For Electric Powerboat Racing Championship

The Lagos State Government has announced comprehensive traffic diversions and waterway restrictions ahead of the historic Electric Powerboat Racing Championship (E1 Series), set to take place on the Victoria Island Lagoon from Friday, October 3, to Sunday, October 5, 2025.

The event, which marks the first time Africa will host the world’s premier all-electric powerboat series, necessitates significant adjustments to both vehicular and marine movements to ensure safety and smooth operations.

The Ministry of Transportation has issued a traffic advisory detailing road closures, notably a total road closure at the First Lekki Junction inward Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island, for the duration of the race weekend.

The critical closure, it said, is necessary to manage the influx of spectators and ensure a safe perimeter for the international event.

To mitigate the impact on vehicular movement, alternative routes have been clearly outlined for motorists.

Those traveling from Ajah and heading toward Lekki are advised to make a U-turn at the Lekki 1st Junction (near the pedestrian bridge) to access Yesufu Abiodun, proceeding to the Maroko Police Station.

From there, they can link the City of David to Ligali Ayorinde, which connects to Ajose Adeogun, leading straight to the Eko Hotel Roundabout, Ahmadu Bello Way, Independence Bridge, and McEwen/Onikan, to continue their journeys.

An alternative route for traffic coming from Ajah and moving inward CMS involves going through Abraham Adesanya to Ogombo Road, accessing Okun Ajah Road to connect the Coastal Road, and then proceeding to Ahmadu Bello Way and the subsequent routes to McEwen/Onikan.

In addition to road diversions, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has announced the temporary closure of all private and commercial jetties and terminals along the Five Cowries Creek.

Specific closure schedules have been provided: on Friday, October 3, there will be a total closure of the waterways between the Oriental Hotel and Mekwen Bridge from 10:00am to 6:00pm.

For Saturday, October 4, and Sunday, October 5 (Race Day), a complete closure of the entire Falomo Bridge to Oriental Hotel stretch will be enforced between 8:00am and 6:00pm daily.

Normal operations on the affected waterways are scheduled to resume on Monday, October 6.

This E1 Lagos Grand Prix is more than a sporting contest; it is a major milestone for the State, promoting eco-tourism, innovation, and a blue economy agenda. The government has implored residents and commuters to exercise patience, cooperate with traffic management officials, and utilize the alternate routes to ensure the championship is a resounding success, placing Lagos firmly on the global sporting map alongside host cities like Monaco and Jeddah.

Adequate parking arrangements have been secured at designated locations on Victoria Island, including Fidelity Bank, Access Bank, and the Law School premises, to facilitate spectator access.
