Ibadan woman sent to prison for alleged theft of 2-month-old baby

A 25-year-old woman identified as Odunayo Odunlade has remanded in Agodi correctional centre, Ibadan, Oyo State for allegedly stealing a two-month-old baby.

The police arraigned Odunlade before a Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Mapo in Ibadan on one-count charge of stealing.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Inspector Oluseye Akinola, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 24 at Lascap-Oniyanrin area of Ibadan.

Akinola said that Odunlade stole the child from the bedroom where his mother had placed him.

He said that officers at Mokola police station swung into action immediately after receiving details of the defendant’s atrocity.

Akinola said that the police successfully tracked the defendant at a location, which she had not disclosed some days after stealing the child.

According to him, the offence contravenes the provisions of section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. ii, Law of Oyo State, 2000.

Odunlade, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegation.

The magistrate, Mrs. O.O. Latunji, had admitted Odunlade to bail in the sum of N500,000, with two reliable sureties in like sum.

However, the accused person was unable to fulfill the bail conditions granted her by the court.

Latunji thereafter, adjourned the case to October 21 for trial.
