A group, The Future Platform USA, a Non-Governmental Organization of Nigerian professionals and citizens based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, has urged the Federal government and the National Assembly to proscribe the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
It made the call while describing the allegations of the factional president of NANS, Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, against President Bola Tinubu’s son Seyi, as “misleading”.
In a statement jointly issued by it’s president Austin Dafe; Secretary Dr. Earnest Ahamioje; and Publicity Director Afolabi Adeusi, the group said it is “deeply concerned by the growing trend of misinformation campaigns targeting individuals with proven dedication to public service. As a platform that supports the emergence of credible and visionary leaders, The Future Platform USA condemns any attempts to malign the character of Mr. Seyi Tinubu with unfounded allegations.
“It is critical that Nigerians—both at home and in the diaspora—are presented with facts that reflect reality, not rhetoric driven by political bias or personal agendas.”
The group said that “the claims made by NANS are not only baseless but appear to be part of a broader, deliberate effort to undermine the reputation of Seyi and the Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande, whose steadfast support for Tinubu’s son has drawn unwarranted criticism.
The group added that it supports the aspiration of Seyi for the governorship of Lagos State because he “has consistently demonstrated integrity, vision, and a genuine commitment to national development.
“His advocacy for humanitarian causes and dedication to public service has inspired countless Nigerians, particularly the youth.
“His leadership values are grounded in transparency, compassion, and progress—and these principles are evident in his contributions to community development and youth empowerment,” the statement read.
The group has, therefore, urged the Federal government and the National Assembly to “consider the dissolution of the current structure of NANS as it is, and replace it with a more credible and accountable association that would truly represent Nigerian students.
It said it is evident that the original mission of NANS has been compromised, as the organization has become a tool for political manipulation rather than a voice for students.
The group also stated that “the current leadership within NANS raises serious concerns about its credibility.”
It believes many of the executive members of NANS appear to have overstayed their time within the academic system, casting doubt on their legitimacy and purpose within the educational system.
