The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra Command, has set March 1 to commence the sanctioning of transporters and fleet operators for non-compliance with passengers’ manifests and installation of speed limit devices.
The Anambra Sector Commander, Mrs. Joyce Alexander, disclosed this on Saturday in Awka, while briefing journalists on the command’s performance in the 2024 ‘Operation Zero’ programme.
She decried the low level of compliance with the installation of speed limit devices by commercial transporters, especially fleet operators, and associated sharp practices such as tampering with the device.
The sector commander also lamented that many inter-state commercial drivers and fleet operators fail to comply with carrying passengers’ manifest with a column for blood group as provided by law when travelling.
This, according to her, helps timely identification of passengers and facilitates medical attention for victims in the instance of an accident.
“From March 1, FRSC will commence total enforcement in Anambra. We will have special intervention patrols where we will stop and check vehicles.
“Any motorist, especially fleet operators found sabotaging the implementation of the Speed Limit Device and passengers’ manifest will be arrested.
“The corps will no longer tolerate fleet operators and motorists failing to adhere strictly to the terms of the road safety standardization.
“This enforcement is necessary to avoid road traffic crashes and save lives and property in Anambra,” she said.
Alexander urged drivers to make it mandatory for all passengers to fill in their correct details in the manifest if they wish to follow their buses.
While appreciating the Anambra state government for the ongoing road construction and rehabilitation, the sector commander said that it would help to reduce the rate of road crashes.
She also appealed to road users to obey traffic rules.
The sector commander also commended the media for partnering with FRSC in the area of public enlightenment and education of road users on safety on the highway.
