The Federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to upgrading infrastructure in the 115 Federal Government Colleges aka Unity Schools, across Nigeria.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, made this pledge on Monday during an unscheduled inspection at Queens College, Yaba, Lagos.
Visibly displeased with the state of infrastructure decay at the nearly century-old institution, Alausa highlighted pressing challenges, including inadequate facilities for the growing student population.
According to the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, the visit aimed to evaluate infrastructure, leadership, and student welfare.
While interacting with students, teachers, and the Principal, Alausa emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of improved education for all Nigerians.
He assured that Queens College and other Unity Schools would receive the necessary support to foster academic excellence.
The plans include renovating and constructing facilities such as libraries, dining areas, hostels, and classrooms.
The minister thanked the school’s leadership, staff, and students for their warm reception and promised better welfare packages for teachers alongside enhanced learning environments for students.
Alausa, according to Boriowo, will continue unannounced visits to other Unity Schools in the coming months, reflecting the Federal Ministry of Education’s resolve to ensure robust infrastructure, effective leadership, and improved student welfare nationwide.
Queens College Principal, Dr. Oyindamola Obabori, appreciated the visit, noting the minister’s encouraging feedback and constructive suggestions. She reiterated the college’s commitment to maintaining high standards and improving further with the promised government support.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to establish optimal capacities in Unity Schools, ensuring better student-to-teacher ratios, adequate resources, and conducive boarding and feeding arrangements.
